In the last week of January, more than 500 students from 13 cities across Britain and Ireland took part in the calligraphy competition entitled Beautiful Handwriting, organized by the Educational Centre “Znaniye” with the assistance of Rossotrudnichestvo, the Russian Embassy in the UK, and the Russian University of Friendship. The Beautiful Handwriting competition is the first project within the framework of the Russian-British Year of Language and Literature.
The goal of the competition was to rewrite a given text without spelling, punctuation or writing errors. Tasks were divided into five levels of difficulty depending on the age group of the contestant. Forty minutes were allowed for copying the text, with a visual aid permitted for showing examples of the written Russian alphabet.
The contest was open to everyone aged 6 years or older. Organisers’ expectations were exceeded with contestants coming from as far afield as Aberdeen, Dundee, Leeds, Birmingham, Derby, Coventry, Worcester, Cambridge, Warrington, Ipswich, Dublin and London, showing how widespread are the fans of Russian language and Russian calligraphy.
Our own Centre was also represented in the contest, with Rosinka students at grades 1-4 participating. All the children made a great effort! Everyone participating received a certificate inscribed with his or her name.
The contest certainly helped children realise how important it is not only to write correctly but beautifully!
